6 Reasons Why Highly Intelligent People Struggle In Search Of Happiness by emperormero(m) : 1:33 pm On Apr 13, 2017

If you’re a human being, you are constantly searching for reasons to keep yourself happy. It’s a feeling that is difficult to measure and equally difficult to define. The instance in which the feeling is triggered is different within humans. For some, it might be the presence of a faithful, loving and caring partner; while for others, it may be a successful career. Sometimes, these things are just not enough to give that warm and satisfying feeling. Intelligent or not, people have a different view of what makes them happy. Ernest Hemingway described happiness as:

“Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.”

The ability to understand and decode the complex life we live comes with a price. Here are some of those reasons why intelligent people struggle to find happiness.

1. Over analysis is a common nature for intelligent people.

To put things simply; the more intelligent you are, the more analytical you will be. And the more your brain starts to analyze, the more time it will spend on finding flaws in everything. Most people who are equipped with a high level of intelligence are prone to this. They lean towards over-thinking and they analyze every aspect of their lives. The more time your brain spends on analyzing the simplest of things, the more exhausted you will be; which will eventually lead to conclusions and frustration. Over-thinking or over analyzing is like an anchor. It weighs you down. And as the weight grows, it eventually drowns you.

Even though highly intelligent people have a great ability to analyze everything that goes on in their surroundings, it is a gift that causes a great amount of stress. The solution to this issue is to learn to ignore any philosophical, global or external affairs in life. This will eventually lead to happiness.

2. They have high expectations in life and try to compare everything to their high standards.

Highly intelligent people are completely aware and sure of what they want in life. They have expectations; whether it be relationship, career or anything that matters in life. They expect each to have the same qualities as themselves. If something fails their expectations, it leads to unhappiness and makes things more difficult. Theoretical minds usually maintain idealistic views of the world, which doesn’t help them when it comes to the practical world.

One of the main ingredients of unhappiness among intelligent people is the fact that they are too hard on themselves. They often have the tendency to relate it to everything, not just success or failure. Since they are deep thinkers, they constantly monitor their every move and compare it to the highest of standards. This unintentional characteristic provides themselves with sufficient reason to blame themselves, even though there’s no specific reason behind it.

Another issue with intelligent people is that they are constantly haunted by past memories. If they have failed to do something right in the past, that thought could pop up anytime and completely ruin their mood. This also affects the sleep cycle, since the constant thought of not being able to achieve something triggers negative emotions inside the person.

Intelligent people are gifted with a higher IQ, which gives them the power to extend their thoughts even further. This thought process keeps them searching for exceptionalism. This often sways the person away from the meaningful things in life and makes it hard for them to enjoy the simplest of things surrounding them. They consider ordinary life to be boring and hence are in search for exceptionalism; which only exists in parallel universe.

5. They long for meaningful conversations but have a hard time finding someone who appreciates them.

They have a hard time finding someone who can understand them or think from their perspective. Since the lack in comfort and meaningful conversations are high in their case, they become sensitive to their surroundings. They feel misunderstood, lonely and less appreciated since no one is capable of thinking or analyzing things from the depth at which they do. Even though science has proven that smart people lack social skills, they require less socialization than that of an average IQ person.

Everything comes with a price and so does having an intelligent mind. Studies prove that there’s correlation between intelligent minds and psychiatric disorders; such as bipolar disorder and social anxiety. They are also prone to depression which is a by-product of over-thinking.
